Why is Taylor Swift everywhere?
In a recent interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, pop superstar Taylor Swift offered fans an unprecedented look into the intricate world of her musical 'Easter eggs.' Swift, known for embedding cryptic clues and hidden messages within her song lyrics and music videos, explained that this practice began early in her career, specifically when she was 14 or 15 years old, while crafting her debut album. "I think the first time that I started dropping sort of cryptic clues and things in my music was when I was 14 and 15 putting together my first album," Swift stated. Her primary motivation, she revealed, was to incentivize fans to delve into her lyrics, which she considers her proudest professional achievement. "My lyrics are what I'm most proud of out of everything that I do, every aspect of my job, so I really wanted people to read the lyrics." She elaborated on her initial method, which involved capitalizing specific letters in the printed lyrics found in her CD booklets. When these capitalized letters were circled and written down, they would spell out secret codes, passages, or hints about the album's themes or individual songs. Swift noted that the practice "got out of control" when she realized her fans were actively engaging with and enjoying the puzzle-solving aspect. This realization fueled her desire to plan even more elaborate and long-term clues. "All I started thinking of was, 'How do I hint at things? How far is too far in advance? Can I hint at something three years in advance? Can I even plan things out that far?' I think I'm gonna try to do it!" she enthusiastically recounted. The artist cited her music video for "Look What You Made Me Do" as a pivotal moment where she began incorporating visual nods to previous musical eras in her career, further expanding the scope of her hidden messages. She also acknowledged the fan engagement with more complex narratives, such as the "fictional love triangle between three fictional teenagers in the 'folklore' album." Swift concluded by inviting fans to join her on this journey of discovery: "If you want to go down a rabbit hole with us, come along. The water's fine. Jump in! We're all mad here."
