Washington D.C. – A community organizer and activist, identified as Afeni, was reportedly pepper-sprayed and detained by Metro Transit Police following an interaction that began as an alleged fare evasion stop involving three young people. The incident, which occurred in a DC curfew zone, has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from community members.According to video footage and a "Community Alert" issued by the activist's supporters, Afeni was lawfully recording the interaction between the police and the youth when the situation escalated. "I want people to know that this is the fascist takeover DC and that our youth are gonna be directly impacted," Afeni stated emotionally during her detention, adding, "It doesn't fucking matter about me. I will be fine, our kids will not be."The video shows Afeni being escorted by officers, visibly distressed and crying, before later footage depicts her being detained while an officer appears to be holding a bottle, with accompanying text stating she was "pepper spraying her directly in the eyes and within one foot of her face." Comments on social media expressed shock and anger, with one user noting, "They pepper sprayed her!!???? 🤬" and another questioning, "why is that cop smiling? what’s funny?" in reference to an officer seen in the background.Afeni was subsequently taken to Howard University Hospital for treatment of her injuries. The community alert emphasizes that "the response to fare evasion should never be violence" and calls for "love, solidarity, and presence" for Afeni, demanding an immediate release from custody and updates on her condition. The incident is being highlighted as another example of how policing in D.C. allegedly endangers youth and our community leaders.
