The Unlikely Rise of Matt Williams: From Halftime Hero to Texas Tech Kicking Legend

Lubbock, TX – The remarkable journey of Matt Williams, a former Texas Tech Red Raiders kicker, continues to inspire, years after his unexpected recruitment. Williams, who was once just a regular college student, gained instant recognition when he successfully kicked a 30-yard field goal during a halftime contest. This extraordinary feat caught the attention of then-head coach Mike Leach, who, impressed by Williams' raw talent, offered him a spot on the team. Williams quickly transitioned from the stands to the field, joining the Texas Tech football program. By 2009, he had secured the position of starting kicker, demonstrating exceptional accuracy throughout his collegiate career. He successfully converted 60 extra points and 14 field goals in his first year as a starter. The following season, he maintained his strong performance, converting 9 out of 11 field goals and an impressive 56 extra points. His longest field goal was a 43-yard kick. Over his entire career, Williams achieved an outstanding record, making 149 out of 150 extra points, placing him sixth among kickers in Texas Tech history. Despite his collegiate success, Williams did not pursue a career in the NFL. Today, he channels his passion for football into coaching, currently serving as a coach at Mineola High School.
