Kalamazoo Central JV Player Speaks Out Amidst Racist Threats Following Football Incident Kalamazoo, MI – Rhys King, a 15-year-old junior varsity football player for Kalamazoo Central, has released a video statement addressing the escalating backlash and racist threats directed at his team, coaches, and school following a recent on-field incident. King’s teammate reportedly performed an illegal move that resulted in an injury to a Lakeshore player. In his statement, King acknowledged the severity of his teammate’s action, stating, "The decision my teammate made and what he did to the Lakeshore player was not alright. It was an illegal move and it had no place." However, he clarified that the injury itself was "not intentional at all," suggesting his teammate's action was a misguided celebration rather than a malicious act. He also noted that his teammate expressed a desire to apologize but the injured player had already been transported to the hospital. King highlighted the lack of immediate intervention during the game, explaining that neither coaches nor referees witnessed the incident as it occurred during a two-point conversion attempt in the backfield. "Everyone was focused in on a scoring," he said. The focus of King's video then shifted to the "racism that's come with this," detailing "un-aliving threats" and racist slurs being directed at Kalamazoo Central students, staff, and coaches via social media posts, comments, and phone calls. He vehemently defended his coaches, asserting they "did not teach this" and have positively transformed the team's culture over the years. "They are not just great coaches, but they are great men," King stated, emphasizing that they do not deserve to have their lives or families threatened. Concluding his message, King advocated for forgiveness and love, citing Proverbs 15:1 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. He urged people to respond with understanding rather than hate, stating, "You cannot fight hate with hate, you can only fight hate with love." He expressed hope that both his teammate would be forgiven and that those making hateful comments would also be shown forgiveness, recognizing that they are "making bad decisions and treating us like we're less than human, like we're violent."
