Garden designer Ish shared how doing one simple task in September can help dahlias blooming big and healthy flowers until the winter months.
Gardening Expert Shares Secrets to Thriving Dahlias Year-Round London, UK – As the gardening season progresses, enthusiasts are always seeking ways to maximize their floral displays. A popular online gardening expert, known as "Gardening with Ish," recently shared his top tips for cultivating dahlias, promising continuous blooms until winter and successful overwintering. In a recent video, the expert detailed the optimal conditions for dahlias, emphasizing their need for well-draining soil that retains some moisture and abundant sunlight. He demonstrated the crucial technique of deadheading, explaining, "By deadheading, you want to cut right at the base of the stem, so no energy is wasted on the stem here, it's all into new flowers." This practice, he noted, redirects the plant's energy into producing more blossoms. Beyond pruning, the expert also advocated for regular feeding. While a multi-purpose feed is acceptable, he specifically recommended using a tomato feed every couple of weeks. "You'll boost the potassium in the soil and give you bigger, healthier flowers," he explained. Addressing common pest issues, particularly slugs, the gardener suggested an organic solution. "One thing I like to do is apply some used coffee grounds around the base of the plant," he said. "Not only does that work as a good slow-release feed... but the slugs and snails absolutely detest the stuff and it should keep them at bay." For winter protection, the video offered two methods. Gardeners can either apply a thick layer of mulch to protect the tubers in the ground, ensuring they don't get too wet, or dig up the tubers after the foliage has died back. These dug-up tubers can then be stored in a cardboard box with sawdust in a cool, dry place like a garage or shed, ready to be replanted in March for another season of spectacular blooms.
