Gardener's Clever Sandwich Bag Trick Tackles Stubborn Bindweed Without Harming Other Plants

Gardener Shares Innovative "Sandwich Bag" Method to Combat Stubborn Bindweed A gardening enthusiast, known as "Gardening with Ish," has recently demonstrated a unique and targeted approach to eradicate bindweed, a common and notoriously difficult-to-control garden pest. The method, dubbed the "sandwich bag technique," aims to eliminate bindweed effectively while protecting surrounding plants from chemical exposure. In his recent video, Ish explained the two-pronged strategy. Firstly, he highlighted that dense planting in garden borders can naturally suppress bindweed by limiting light access, thereby slowing its growth. However, for those persistent bindweed shoots that inevitably emerge, a more direct intervention is required. "All I do is I unwind a good big clump of this bindweed and don't detach it from the main stem," Ish stated. He then demonstrated carefully placing the bindweed foliage into a sandwich bag, pinching the tip to expose it, and spraying a weed killer directly into the bag. "As a result, all of those chemicals that you don't want on your plants are contained in this bag and on the bindweed," he elaborated. This localized application ensures the weed killer travels down to the bindweed's root system without affecting nearby desired plants. Ish also provided guidance on the type of weed killer to use, suggesting both natural alternatives like an equal mix of water, salt, and white vinegar (which dehydrates the plant but may not kill the root), and store-bought options. He emphasized the importance of selecting chemical weed killers that break down with microorganisms in the soil to prevent long-term damage to the garden's ecosystem. "You don't want that damaging your soil whatsoever," he advised. The technique is applicable even for bindweed found in hedges, offering a versatile solution for gardeners.
