A new gardening trend is emerging as savvy shoppers discover a "clever trick" to acquire mature plants at significantly reduced prices. Gardening expert Ish, known for his online advice, recently highlighted that supermarkets and DIY stores dramatically cut prices on plants in September as the gardening season winds down. This presents an opportunity for gardeners to purchase perfectly healthy perennials for a fraction of their original cost. Ish demonstrated the simple process of reviving these discounted plants, which often appear neglected due to dead flowers or foliage. "Nothing at all is wrong with them," Ish explained, holding up a discounted hydrangea. "This is actually perfectly healthy, but because there's a few dead flowers on the top, they don't know that actually this is a perfectly fine plant that is a perennial that will come back year after year." He advised a quick tidy-up, cutting away dead foliage just above healthy growth. "You'll be able to plant this up right now while the ground is still warm, and it will thrive year after year," he added, showcasing a revitalized plant. The expert recommends focusing on hardy perennials that can withstand winter, suggesting non-hardy varieties be kept in a greenhouse until spring. This method allows gardeners to achieve a fuller, more vibrant garden next year with a minimal investment.
