Nepal's Political Earthquake: Gen Z Protests Force Government Resignations Amidst Corruption and Economic Woes
Kathmandu, Nepal - Recent widespread protests in Nepal, largely spearheaded by Generation Z, have led to significant political upheaval, culminating in the resignation of the Prime Minister and other ministers. While initially perceived by some as a reaction to a government-imposed social media ban, journalist Gergana Krasteva explained that the ban was merely a catalyst for deeper-seated frustrations. The capital, Kathmandu, witnessed the deadliest unrest in its modern history, with reports indicating that at least 17 people were killed and 400 more injured after police fired live rounds on protesters, many of whom were students. The social media ban, which included platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, was swiftly overturned following the government's resignations. However, the core issues driving the protests are far more complex. "The protests are about escalating corruption, a reflection of generational frustration, and poor economic opportunities," Krasteva stated. Data from the World Bank highlights the severity of the situation, with youth unemployment (ages 15-24) reaching 20.8% in Nepal in 2024. Another significant factor fueling public anger is the 'Nepo Babies' movement. This movement criticizes the children of Nepalese politicians who openly display lavish lifestyles online, a stark contrast to the struggles faced by the general populace. The rapid escalation of events and the government's swift response serve as a stark reminder for global leaders about the potent force of youth-led movements demanding accountability and change.
