Kathmandu, Nepal - September 9, 2025 - Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, has been engulfed in widespread protests since September 8, leading to significant unrest and an estimated 20 fatalities. An international conference attendee, an HIV/AIDS Counselor, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, reported being stranded at the Radisson Hotel due to the escalating violence. "The situation is getting worse," he stated, describing attacks on the parliament and major hotels. "The destruction is more severe than yesterday." The Nepalese government has reportedly blocked social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram in an attempt to curb the flow of information. The source indicated that the protests are a direct response to deep-seated corruption within the government. The airport has been closed, preventing international visitors, including attendees from 23 to 24 countries gathered for a conference, from leaving the country. "We are advised not to leave the hotel; even walking 1.5 km to our accommodation is considered unsafe," he explained, adding that local drivers are unwilling to transport tourists. The protests are anticipated to continue until Thursday, with hopes for a return to normalcy by Friday. The Malaysian embassy has reportedly stated that the situation is "under control," though those on the ground feel otherwise.
