EDSA's New Odd-Even Traffic Scheme: A Month-Long Test Run Begins
Metro Manila's EDSA to Implement Odd-Even Scheme: A Month-Long Dry Run Begins Metro Manila, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is preparing for a significant change in traffic management on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city. Starting June 16, 2025, a new Odd-Even number coding scheme will be implemented, replacing the existing number coding system used on other roads. Before the full implementation, a one-month dry run will take place. "Gagawin nang isang buwan ang dry run para sa Odd-Even Scheme sa EDSA na ipatutupad simula sa June 16," stated a MMDA representative in a recent GMA News report. This translates to: "The dry run for the Odd-Even Scheme on EDSA, which will be implemented starting June 16, will be for one month." The Odd-Even scheme will restrict vehicles based on the last digit of their license plates on specific days. The MMDA aims to reduce traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. However, during the dry run, motorists will receive notices of violations but will not be fined. One motorist interviewed expressed optimism, stating, "Mas maganda nga 'yun eh. Para lumuwag ang EDSA. Nagiging parking na eh." This translates to: "That's much better, actually. So EDSA will be less congested. It's becoming a parking lot now." The MMDA's plan also involves utilizing the Skyway system to reroute traffic. The authority is currently studying how to make parts of the Skyway toll-free to encourage its use as an alternative route. The changes are expected to impact thousands of commuters daily. The success of this implementation will be crucial in improving traffic flow in Metro Manila.
