Philippines to Go Cashless: LRT and MRT Embrace New Payment System
MANILA, Philippines – Cashless payments are coming to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) systems in the Philippines. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that starting in July, commuters will be able to use e-wallets, debit, and credit cards to pay their fares. This initiative, part of President Bongbong Marcos's push for modernization, aims to improve efficiency and reduce the risks associated with carrying cash. "It's good news," said one commuter interviewed in the video, "because it means no more worries about holding up the line or carrying large amounts of cash." Another commuter added, "It's more convenient, and I feel safer not having to carry cash around." The DOTr is deploying cashless payment terminals at all LRT and MRT stations. The new system is expected to benefit millions of commuters daily, making their journeys smoother and more secure. This modernization initiative is a positive step towards a more efficient and secure public transportation system in the Philippines.
