Philippines to Go Cashless on LRT and MRT Lines Starting July 2025
Cashless Payments Coming to Philippine LRT and MRT Lines The Philippines is set to modernize its public transportation system with the upcoming implementation of cashless payments on LRT and MRT lines. Starting July 2025, commuters will be able to use various methods to pay their fares, including debit and credit cards, and mobile e-wallets such as GCash and PayMaya. This initiative, announced by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), is part of a broader effort to improve the efficiency and convenience of public transit in the country. "This is a significant step towards modernizing our public transportation system," said DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon in a recent press conference. "We want to make it easier and more convenient for commuters to pay their fares, and this is a crucial part of that process." The rollout will include pilot testing and a public information campaign to ensure a smooth transition. GCash is already being accepted at select MRT3 stations as a cashless payment option. The move is in line with President Bongbong Marcos Jr.'s vision to make public transportation more efficient and accessible for all Filipinos. This initiative promises a more streamlined and technologically advanced commuting experience for millions.
