Dame Esther Rantzen Expresses Astonishment and Gratitude as Assisted Dying Bill Advances in Parliament
London, UK – Assisted dying campaigner Dame Esther Rantzen expressed her profound astonishment and gratitude following the approval of the assisted dying bill by Members of Parliament. In an interview, Rantzen described the moment as deeply significant, stating, "I'm astonished and deeply grateful to everyone, including my oncologist who has helped this day come." She recalled a commitment made by Keir Starmer, prior to his election as Prime Minister, when he was Leader of the Opposition. "Months ago, before he was elected Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, when he was leader of the opposition, said that he would do his best to make sure that I witnessed the debate," Rantzen stated. "I didn't think it was possible. It's happened. I'm astonished and deeply grateful to everyone, including my oncologist who has helped this day come." When asked about the prospect of the bill becoming law, Rantzen emphasized its critical importance. "It's hugely important that this becomes law. Really, really important that dying people in future will have the confidence of knowing that they can ask for a pain-free, quick death," she concluded, highlighting the potential impact on individuals facing terminal illness.
