Beijing, China – A recent viral video from Serbian content creator 'Ja sam Aleksandar' has sparked discussions about cultural recognition, as it explores the familiarity of Chinese citizens with two prominent Serbian figures: President Aleksandar Vučić and Valter, the iconic character from the 1972 Yugoslav partisan film 'Walter Defends Sarajevo.' The video, filmed on the streets of Beijing, shows the interviewer presenting photographs of both individuals to various passersby. While many respondents quickly identified President Vučić, a significant number also recognized Valter, often with a nostalgic smile. One young woman, upon seeing President Vučić, exclaimed, 'That's our president Vučić!' before being shown a picture of Valter and simply stating, 'Valter.' Another interviewee, a man, confidently identified Valter, saying, 'That's Valter.' The creator, 'Ja sam Aleksandar,' noted in the video's description, 'Valter (Bata Živojinović) is the most popular Serb in China. Proud that the Chinese, at least partially, recognize my work.' This sentiment reflects the film's historical popularity in China, where it was widely screened and became a cultural phenomenon. The informal survey offers a glimpse into the diverse cultural touchstones that resonate with the Chinese public, bridging political recognition with cinematic legacy.
