Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – A video circulating on social media has sparked concern after it depicted a tourist positioned dangerously on the "cadeirinha" formation at Pedra da Gávea, a prominent peak in Rio de Janeiro, without any safety equipment. The footage, shared by Jornal de Brasília, shows the woman lying on the rock face, with a vast expanse of the city, beaches, and ocean visible hundreds of meters below. The "cadeirinha," or "little chair," is a natural rock formation located between the sheer rock walls of Pedra da Gávea's "Garganta do Céu" (Throat of Heaven). It is renowned for its stunning panoramic views but is also recognized as an extremely high-risk area, demanding significant safety precautions. In the video, other voices can be heard in the background, suggesting that the location was being used for photo opportunities despite the evident danger. Authorities have consistently warned that the trail leading to Garganta do Céu should only be attempted with experienced guides and the appropriate use of safety gear, such as harnesses and ropes. They emphasize that unnecessary exposure to such risks can lead to severe accidents or fatalities. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of responsible tourism and adherence to safety guidelines when engaging in high-altitude or extreme outdoor activities.
