Switzerland Approves Free Abortions, Setting New Standard in Europe

Switzerland to Cover Abortion Costs, Becoming European Leader in Reproductive Rights Bern, Switzerland – The Swiss parliament has approved a landmark reform that will make abortions free for women across the country starting in 2027. Under the new legislation, health insurance will cover the full costs of pregnancy terminations, a move that positions Switzerland as a frontrunner in reproductive rights within Europe. Until now, women in Switzerland faced significant financial burdens, paying up to 2,600 euros for an abortion. This new policy aims to enhance women's self-determination and ensure that financial constraints do not prevent access to essential healthcare. The decision was met with broad consensus in the Swiss parliament, with almost no opposing votes. Only the Christian-national conservative EDU party rejected the reform. This progressive step contrasts sharply with trends observed in other European nations, such as Hungary and Poland, where abortion access has been increasingly restricted. Switzerland currently records approximately 12,000 abortions annually, a figure considered low in international comparison. The implementation of this new law is expected to further solidify Switzerland's commitment to gender equality and public health.
