VÉNISSIEUX, France – Jean-Pierre, a sexagenarian, has been living homeless in Vénissieux for a year after his camper van, which served as his home and contained all his possessions, was seized and sold by the state. The former chemistry worker, who had purchased the Fiat Ducato for €50,600 after selling his house, found his life irrevocably altered last summer. His camper was impounded in November for 'dangerous parking.' According to Jean-Pierre, a notification was sent to an old address in Loir-et-Cher and returned, preventing him from being informed of the seizure. Consequently, the vehicle was declared 'abandoned' after 15 days and subsequently sold by the state for €32,000. Jean-Pierre expressed profound dismay, stating, 'The state enriched itself at my expense. It's a total injustice.' He emphasized that the camper was his home and contained crucial documents for his retirement. He had hoped to finalize his retirement and travel abroad, but now feels that 'France, for me, is over.' Following media coverage, including articles by Le Progrès, numerous individuals have mobilized to support Jean-Pierre, providing him with food and financial assistance. 'I've had about thirty people come to help,' he noted, expressing gratitude for their 'very sympathetic and encouraging' gestures. He currently awaits the completion of his retirement file, with the sole hope of moving to Greece. 'I hope things will change for the future,' he added, advocating for greater attention to those in need.
