A Serbian family's holiday in Greece took an unexpected turn when their car's license plates were confiscated by local police over a parking violation. The incident, which occurred in Nea Kallikratia, has highlighted the severe consequences of seemingly minor infractions under Greek law. The family, consisting of four adults and three children, had stopped briefly with two cars, one of which was reportedly improperly parked. According to the video's author, police immediately photographed the vehicle and removed its license plates in their presence, without allowing for explanation. A fine of 150€ was issued, which the family promptly paid. However, upon presenting proof of payment at the police station, they were informed that their vehicle documents and license plates would be held for 60 to 70 days. This revelation left the family stranded with a car that could not be driven, expired accommodation, and three children, facing immense logistical difficulties in returning to Serbia. Attempts to seek assistance from the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Greece were met with the response that this was Greek law and no immediate solution could be offered. The family was advised to find alternative transportation or accommodation, leaving them to navigate a complex and costly return journey without their vehicle or essential driving documents. This incident serves as a stark warning to all international travelers, particularly those driving in Greece, to be meticulously aware of local parking regulations to avoid similar unforeseen and severe complications.
