Malaysia Seeks to Revitalize Agriculture with Youth-Focused Initiatives
Gopeng, Perak, Malaysia - June 1, 2025 - The Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is intensifying its efforts to attract young people to the agricultural sector. Deputy Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup acknowledged the significant challenge posed by a shrinking younger generation of farmers, a problem faced not only by Malaysia but also many other countries worldwide. "The aging farmer population is a serious issue," stated Datuk Kurup. The ministry is implementing a three-pronged approach to revitalize the sector. First, it is working to improve market access for young farmers, providing them with more opportunities to sell their produce. Second, the ministry is promoting a shift towards more modern farming techniques, incorporating technology and innovation to enhance efficiency and profitability. Finally, KPKM is expanding training programs to equip young people with the skills needed for success in agriculture, including courses in livestock, aquaculture, and horticulture, even covering accommodation and daily allowances. This initiative demonstrates the government's commitment to securing the future of Malaysian agriculture and food security, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous sector for generations to come.
