New 'La Routo' Trail Revives Ancient Transhumance Routes in Verdon Park
A new initiative, 'La Routo,' is inviting hikers to explore the historical transhumance routes through the Verdon Regional Natural Park, stretching an impressive 550 kilometers from Arles, France, to Cuneo in the Italian Piedmont. Claire Dallemagne, a mission manager for 'La Maison de la Transhumance' association, highlighted the project's goals. 'The idea is to allow hikers to discover the history of transhumance, the landscapes shaped by the sheep, and the work of the breeders and shepherds,' Dallemagne stated. She added that the trail also promotes local products, including regional lamb, cheeses, and Merino d'Arles wool. The project emphasizes the crucial role of livestock in maintaining biodiversity, preventing forest fires, and reducing avalanche risks, urging visitors to respect these active working environments.
