Batam, Indonesia – Police in Batam have successfully apprehended a suspect identified as DS (28) in connection with an alleged illegal human trafficking operation. The suspect is accused of recruiting Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) under false pretenses, promising lucrative positions as online gambling operators in Cambodia with monthly salaries reaching Rp13 million. According to Kapoleresta Barelang Kombes Pol Zaenal Arifin, the case came to light following reports from the community regarding suspicious activities in the Bida Asri 2 housing complex in Batam City. "After investigation, it was confirmed that there was indeed an illegal PMI shipment," stated Kombes Pol Zaenal Arifin at the Batam City Police Headquarters on Monday, June 16, 2025. Authorities confirmed that two victims from Jambi, identified as HZA (26) and Z (28), were rescued as part of this operation. Police investigations revealed that DS collaborated with a relative residing in Cambodia, identified only as Z, who acted as the primary recruiter. DS's role involved accommodating the victims in Batam and facilitating their departure. During interrogation, DS admitted to receiving a payment of Rp300,000 for each individual illegally sent. He also confessed that this was his first involvement in illegal PMI shipments, having previously worked as a manager in a night entertainment venue in Batam. The victims were unaware that the recruitment process was illegal and did not follow official channels.
