Refrigerator Longevity: The Overlooked Importance of Condenser Coil Cleaning.A recent online video by appliance expert Corey from McMullan Appliance & Mattress has shed light on a crucial yet often neglected aspect of refrigerator maintenance: cleaning the condenser coils. The video, which has garnered significant attention, emphasizes that this simple task can drastically extend the lifespan and efficiency of household refrigerators.Corey explains that all refrigerators operate as heat pumps, designed to transfer heat from inside the unit to the surrounding room. In older models, these condenser coils are visibly located on the back of the appliance. However, modern refrigerators typically house these vital components behind a kick plate at the bottom. "I've seen a lot of fridges show up in the junk bin too early because people avoid the most important piece of maintenance you can do on a refrigerator," Corey states in the video, highlighting the widespread oversight. The expert demonstrates how dust, dirt, and pet hair can accumulate on these coils, effectively insulating them. This accumulation prevents the coils from dissipating heat efficiently, forcing the refrigerator's compressor to work harder and run longer to maintain the desired internal temperature. "It's basically covered with insulation. It can't dissipate that heat into the room," he explains. This continuous overexertion not only increases energy consumption but also accelerates wear and tear, leading to premature appliance failure.Corey strongly advises homeowners to check and clean their refrigerator's condenser coil at least once a year, and even more frequently if they have pets, as pet hair is a significant contributor to coil blockage. By regularly removing the kick plate and vacuuming or dusting the coils, consumers can ensure their refrigerators operate optimally, save on energy bills, and avoid costly repairs or early replacements.
