Mexican Band Los Tucanes de Tijuana Fined for Glorifying Crime in Narcocorridos
Chihuahua, Mexico – Popular Mexican band Los Tucanes de Tijuana recently faced legal consequences for their performance at the traditional Santa Rita Fair. The group was fined 735,410 pesos for performing narcocorridos, songs that glorify drug trafficking and violence. Pedro Oliva, Subdirector of Governance for the municipality of Chihuahua, explained the situation, stating, "Por hacer apología del delito con la interpretación de sus narcocorridos..." (Because of the apology of the crime with the interpretation of their narcocorridos...). He further clarified that the fine is based on the number of songs that glorified crime, and the final amount could increase after a five-day review. This incident highlights the ongoing debate in Mexico surrounding the portrayal of violence and drug culture in popular music. The case serves as a reminder of the legal ramifications associated with such artistic expression. The band's deposit of 6,500 UMAs (equivalent to the initial fine) will not be returned.
