Martha's Vineyard: A Summer Haven for Black Americans, But at a Price. Martha's Vineyard, a luxurious island off the coast of Massachusetts, is known for its wealthy residents and exclusive atmosphere. However, during the summer months, a significant number of Black Americans visit the island, a trend that has sparked curiosity and discussion. Morgan DeBaun, CEO of AfroTech and Blavity, sheds light on this phenomenon, explaining that the island holds historical significance for Black communities as a place where they could relax and escape racial discrimination. "It was a place where Black people could be on beaches and rest and relax," DeBaun explains in her video. However, she also notes the considerable expense of visiting and staying on Martha's Vineyard. "It is incredibly cost prohibitive if you are not a person who has a family home here," she adds. The video highlights the island's dual nature: a place of historical importance and community for Black Americans, but also a destination that is economically inaccessible to many. The presence of venture capitalists and other business leaders adds another layer to the complex picture of Martha's Vineyard's summer season.
