Black New York Patient Gets Racially Profiled While Having a Sickle Cell Crisis…
A black patient in New York claims she was racially profiled by the hospital's staff after a nurse claimed she "smelled something."
BROOKLYN, NY – A patient undergoing treatment for a sickle cell crisis at NYU Langone Health in Brooklyn has publicly documented an incident she describes as racial profiling, sparking concern over patient care and discrimination within medical facilities. The video, uploaded by user MsValiyahB, shows two security guards conducting a search of her hospital room, including her personal belongings and the bathroom, reportedly initiated after a nurse claimed to have "smelt something." The patient, who wishes to remain anonymous for privacy, captured the event on video, stating, "POV: Pain needs to be minimized while being racially profiled." She expressed profound distress during the search, remarking, "Oh, I'm fuming. This is nuts." She further added, "I've never been to a hospital like this before." The search, which included inspecting the toilet and the patient's bedside area, did not appear to yield any contraband. Towards the end of the video, one of the security guards is heard offering an apology. "I apologize, I hope they get you what you need," he stated, to which the patient responded, "We appreciate your apology." She also indicated that she believes the daytime medical team would provide better care, stating, "It won't be them, it'll be the daytime team. We just gotta make it to 6 AM." The incident has drawn significant attention online, raising questions about the protocols for room searches in hospitals and the potential for implicit bias in patient interactions, particularly for individuals from marginalized communities. Advocates for sickle cell patients often highlight the challenges they face in receiving adequate pain management and equitable treatment in healthcare settings. NYU Langone Health has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
