Diesel Plant Explosion Exposes Fuel Smuggling Ring in Mexico
A significant incident occurred in Cadereyta, Nuevo León, Mexico on May 21, 2025, when a diesel storage facility owned by Marvic exploded, resulting in a substantial fire. The incident has drawn attention due to the ongoing investigation into the company's owner, José Víctor Pablos Vélez, also known as "Güero Marvic." He is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the trafficking of fuel from the United States into Mexico. According to Protección Civil, the fire consumed 13 containers with a capacity exceeding 10,000 liters of diesel. One person was injured and 11 others were evacuated. In a statement, a federal authority confirmed that in 2021, during an operation at the Nuevo Laredo Railway Customs, 550 tank cars suspected of belonging to "Güero Marvic" were seized. These cars allegedly contained fuel illegally imported from the United States. The SAT also suspended Combustoleos Marvic from the importer's registry in March 2025. The video highlights the extensive network of transportation and fuel commercialization companies linked to "Güero Marvic", operating across Texas, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in combating fuel smuggling in the region.
