San Francisco Protest Challenges ICE After Weekend Reporting Surge
San Francisco Protest Targets ICE Following Unusual Reporting Requests San Francisco, CA – On Sunday, June 15, 2025, a protest unfolded in San Francisco's South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood, targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The demonstration stemmed from reports by immigration attorneys about an unusual number of requests for their clients to report in person over the weekend. The requests, according to the attorneys, were considered highly unusual. The protest drew a significant number of participants who voiced their concerns about ICE's tactics. Many carried signs with messages such as "ICE Out The Bay" and "Abolish ICE." One organizer, Luna Osleger-Montanez, stated, "I think what we're seeing right now is that ICE is really escalating these tactics in order to scare people." The demonstration also included drumming and chanting. Katie Kavanagh, a supervising attorney with the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice, shed light on the situation. She explained, "What we strongly suspected or really knew...is that this was employed to get people to come in to try to comply and to detain them." Kavanagh emphasized the understandable fear among those affected and highlighted the efforts of accompaniment teams to provide support and information to those arriving at the ICE office. While the ICE office was closed during the protest, the demonstration served as a powerful display of community support and a call for attention to the concerns surrounding immigration enforcement practices in the Bay Area. The event highlights the ongoing tension between immigration policies and local communities.
