Underwater Volcano Poised to Erupt, but No Tsunami Threat, Expert Says
Axial Seamount: Underwater Volcano Poses No Tsunami Threat, Expert Says An underwater volcano, Axial Seamount, located 300 miles off the Oregon coast, is expected to erupt sometime in 2025. However, according to University of Washington oceanography professor Debbie Kelley, there's no cause for alarm. "It's unlikely for the underwater eruption to trigger a tsunami, a major earthquake, or cause extensive damage like land volcanoes could," she explains. The immense pressure of a mile of water above the volcano significantly dampens the explosive potential of the eruption. Furthermore, the magma composition differs from that of land volcanoes, reducing the risk of significant impact. Professor Kelley's research, conducted with the aid of the Regional Cabled Array, allows scientists to monitor the volcano's activity closely and assure the public of minimal risk. This monitoring system provides early warning, ensuring that any potential eruption will be observed and understood well in advance.
