A 13-year-old girl, Stella Thompson, has recounted her terrifying experience of being evacuated from Camp Mystic in Texas amidst catastrophic flooding. The camp, a beloved summer destination, was ravaged by recent heavy rains, leading to widespread destruction and an urgent rescue operation. Stella, who had just begun her anticipated July term at Camp Mystic, described a 'sense of numbness' initially, which quickly turned to 'hysterical' fear as the true scope of the crisis became apparent. "The uncertainty really shook up our cabin," she stated in an interview. Campers were eventually informed that those along the Guadalupe River had been evacuated due to flooding, but the full extent of the devastation was unknown until military trucks arrived to transport them to safety. Upon leaving the camp, Stella witnessed a scene of widespread destruction. "You'd see kayaks, like in trees," she recalled, describing the sight as 'horrific'. She also noted seeing 'trunks' and 'cloths' in the debris, along with "huge trees ripped out of the ground" with their roots exposed. The familiar landscape of Camp Mystic was unrecognizable. "It didn't look like Camp Mystic anymore," Stella added, reflecting on the profound impact of the floods.
