Double Fare for Overweight Passengers? Philippines Cracks Down on Illegal Practice
Overcharging Passengers in the Philippines: LTFRB Cracks Down on Illegal Practice Manila, Philippines – Passengers in the Philippines are increasingly reporting instances of public transport drivers charging double fares simply because they are overweight. This practice is not only unfair but also illegal, according to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). News5's Frontline Pilipinas recently highlighted the issue, interviewing several passengers who shared their experiences. "It's really upsetting," said one passenger, "to be charged double just because of my weight. It's not right." Another passenger, Melissa Mercuryo, stated, "It’s offensive, as a student, and as a person." The LTFRB spokesperson, Atty. Ariel Inton, confirmed that charging extra based on a passenger's weight is against the law. He emphasized that the fare is based on the gross weight of the person, not their appearance. Drivers found guilty face a 5,000 peso fine and potential franchise revocation. The LTFRB encourages passengers to report overcharging incidents via their hotline (1342) or email (complaints@ltfrb.gov.ph).
