A 73-year-old foreign tourist experienced a harrowing encounter with a bear on the renowned Transfăgărășan road yesterday, an incident captured on video that has since circulated widely. The motorcyclist, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly stopped on a section of the road between Poenari Citadel and Vidraru Dam when a bear approached his vehicle. The video footage shows the bear interacting with the motorcycle, eventually causing it to topple over. The animal then appeared to bite the tourist's leg before rummaging through the motorcycle's luggage and making off with food. Eyewitnesses from a nearby vehicle honked their horns in an attempt to deter the bear, but it was undeterred until it had secured its prize. Following the incident, the motorcyclist received immediate medical attention at the scene for a leg injury. Despite the severity of the attack, he reportedly refused further transport to a hospital. Local authorities, including the Argeș County Police Inspectorate, stated that the motorcyclist had stopped in a queue of vehicles. However, the video itself does not clearly show other cars immediately in front of the motorcycle, leading to questions regarding the exact reason for his stop. This incident underscores growing concerns about the presence of bears in public areas along the Transfăgărășan, a popular tourist destination, and the potential dangers they pose to visitors.
