BUCHAREST, Romania – Five individuals of Asian origin are currently under criminal investigation after being apprehended for illegally hunting protected swans on the Argeș River, near Adunații Copăceni, Giurgiu County. The incident, captured by an eyewitness and widely circulated, has sparked outrage among the public and animal welfare advocates. The shocking footage shows the individuals wading through the river, using sticks to pursue and capture the white swans, which are a protected species under Romanian law. "They were running after a swan, trying to stun it and catch it, like in a crude and absurd scene, ripped from another world," recounted a reporter, describing the intense pursuit. Alerted by a concerned citizen who called the 112 emergency number, law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene. Police successfully intercepted the hunters and rescued the birds. A representative from the Ilfov County Police Inspectorate stated, "The protected birds were found in a household in Adunații Copăceni, near the Argeș River." The swans were subsequently transported to the Visul Luanei animal shelter. Upon arrival at the shelter, the swans were found to be in a state of shock. A shelter employee noted, "The swans, when we took them over, were in shock. They were breathing heavily and weren't reacting aggressively as they should have, precisely because of the shock. However, apart from that, the injuries appeared minor at the time." The quick intervention ensured the birds' safety, preventing them from being consumed as the hunters allegedly intended. The investigation into the illegal hunting is ongoing.
