Homes on Costa Verde Cliffs Face Erosion Risk After Earthquake in Lima
Lima, Peru – Residents of San Miguel and Magdalena districts are expressing growing concern over approximately 20 homes precariously positioned on the eroding cliffs of Costa Verde. The stability of these residences, many constructed prior to the 2019 metropolitan ordinance declaring the area's intangibility, has become a pressing issue, particularly following a recent earthquake that occurred on Father's Day. According to Enrique Sánchez, Municipal Manager of Magdalena, constant inspections have been conducted in the area. "No study establishes that there is a risk of collapse in the Magdalena edifices," Sánchez stated, emphasizing that the 2019 ordinance by Lima Metropolitan Municipality declared the entire malecón and cliff area as intangible to prevent new constructions. However, Luis Luna, Sub-Manager of Disaster Risk Management for San Miguel, highlighted ongoing efforts to address the precarious situation of some homes. "We have gone with the prosecutor to compel the eradication of these houses because they are in a precarious situation," Luna confirmed, adding that drones are used for continuous monitoring of the affected zone. The ordinance specifically prohibits construction within 120 meters of the Costa Verde cliff, a measure aimed at safeguarding both residents and the natural landscape.
