Guatemala Faces Escalating Disaster Risks Amidst Bureaucratic Delays, Warns CONRED Head Guatemala City, Guatemala – Claudinne Ogaldes, the head of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), has issued a stark warning regarding the country's heightened vulnerability to natural disasters. In a recent interview, Ogaldes revealed that debris from the devastating forest fire on Volcán de Agua remains unremoved due to bureaucratic hurdles, posing a significant threat of floods and landslides. "We could have something very similar to what happened at KM 44 (Pacific Route) if we don't remove these debris," Ogaldes stated, emphasizing the potential for recurring disasters. She highlighted that approximately 80% of the country is susceptible to inundations and landslides, a situation exacerbated by ongoing deforestation. Ogaldes stressed the urgent need for a shift in national development focus from mere 'grey infrastructure' like bridges and buildings to 'green infrastructure' and environmental preservation. "When we talk about development, people only think about grey infrastructure, but we don't think about green infrastructure, or environmental infrastructure, or agricultural infrastructure," she explained. "We are removing the forest cover of the country, and that is causing us to have more floods, more landslides." The CONRED chief also pointed out Guatemala's alarming lack of preparedness for seismic events. "There is only one building in Guatemala that has seismic dampeners," she revealed, underscoring that construction standards should be anti-seismic. She lamented that the country often "builds the risk" instead of implementing preventative solutions. Ogaldes confirmed that efforts to remove the debris from Volcán de Agua are being organized with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Communications. However, she critically noted, "We should have done it before the winter began." The delay, she attributed to the extensive and slow bureaucratic processes. "Bureaucracy is so big. We are in a very slow process, unfortunately," she concluded.
