Borisov Officials Debunk Rumors of Ancient Remains and Address Construction Delays at Former Cinema Site

Borisov, Belarus Concerns among residents of Borisov regarding the reconstruction of the former "Pobeda" cinema into a new registry office (ZAGS) have been addressed by local officials. Rumors had circulated about the discovery of human remains, ancient cities, and underground passages beneath the site, as well as claims of a weak foundation rendering the project unfeasible. Sergey Baburo, Deputy Chairman of the Borisov Executive Committee for Construction and Housing and Communal Services, directly refuted these widespread rumors in a recent statement. "No remains were found under the future ZAGS building," Baburo clarified. He acknowledged that human remains were indeed discovered, but specified that "they were uncovered during the laying of utility networks opposite the entrance to a church, under two layers of asphalt and a layer of paving stones." He suggested these could be ancient burials, as it was customary in old times to bury people near churches. Baburo also addressed concerns about the building's foundation. He explained that the structure, built in the 1960s, requires significant structural changes to its foundation to accommodate the new purpose. This necessitates additional expert assessments of the project documentation, which has caused some delays. The reconstruction project is divided into three phases. The first phase, involving the square, is nearing completion. The second phase focuses on the ZAGS building itself, including its reconstruction and landscaping elements. The third phase will involve the construction of pedestrian pathways with decorative fencing and the current repair of the roadway surrounding the square. The goal is to ensure all new elements and renovated facades of surrounding historic buildings align with the 18th-century retro-Russian style of the nearby church.
