Deepfake Danger: Spanish Police Issue Alert on AI-Generated Scams

Madrid, Spain – The Spanish National Police has launched a public awareness campaign to educate citizens about the growing threat of deepfake technology and online fraud. In a recent video disseminated across their official social media channels, the force demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be used to create highly convincing, yet entirely fabricated, video content. The video opens with a stark example, featuring what appears to be two police officers delivering a message. One of the officers is then revealed to be an AI-generated deepfake. A real officer explains the sophisticated nature of these manipulations, stating, "This video is not real, nor was it recorded by any police officer. It is a deepfake, a very convincing falsification created with artificial intelligence, capable of substituting the image of any person to make them do or say even what has never happened." The campaign emphasizes the critical importance of verifying information sources. The National Police advises the public to rely exclusively on official channels for credible information. "You can trust what is published on official sources," the officer clarifies. However, he warns against content shared through less reliable means. "If that message has been forwarded to you by a friend, you see it in a group, or in a general social media publication outside the profiles of the National Police, then that message is not entirely trustworthy." The police specifically urge caution when any unsolicited message, regardless of its apparent source, requests sensitive information. "If to that origin, external to official sources, you add a message that asks for money, your bank details, or personal information, distrust it," the officer concluded, underscoring the common tactics employed by fraudsters leveraging deepfake technology. This initiative aims to equip the public with the knowledge to identify and avoid falling victim to increasingly sophisticated digital scams.
