Minsk Man's Life Savings Stolen in Elaborate Courier Scam
Minsk Man Loses Life Savings in Courier Scam: Police Warn of Rising Fraud A 77-year-old resident of Minsk recently fell victim to a sophisticated scam, losing his life savings to a female courier. The incident highlights a growing trend of fraudulent activities targeting elderly individuals. According to law enforcement officials interviewed in the video, the victim received calls from individuals posing as Beltelecom employees. They claimed his contract needed renewal and requested his passport details, which he provided. Later, he received another call from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer, warning that his savings were at risk unless he transferred them to a designated courier for safekeeping. "The man agreed to the terms of the caller and handed over more than 37,000 rubles equivalent to a female courier," stated a police spokesperson in the video. The courier, a 62-year-old Minsk resident, was herself a victim of a separate scam, having been instructed by the original fraudsters to collect the money and transport it across the border. This incident underscores the importance of public awareness about such scams. Police urge citizens to exercise caution when receiving unexpected calls requesting personal information or financial transactions. Never provide sensitive details over the phone and always verify the identity of the caller through official channels.
