Heather Gordon, a 54-year-old self-proclaimed sleep expert, recently shared her personal regimen for achieving consistent 8-hour sleep cycles. Gordon's advice, aimed at individuals struggling with sleep, emphasizes several key practices. Among her top recommendations, Gordon suggests sleeping alone, if possible, to minimize disturbances. She also highlights the importance of maintaining a strict sleep-wake schedule, going to bed and waking up at the same time daily, to regulate the body's internal clock. Nutritional and hormonal support are also part of her routine. Gordon advises taking 200 mg of magnesium glycinate before bed. For those undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT), she recommends 100 mg of bioidentical progesterone at bedtime. Additionally, she suggests drinking a small amount of salt water (using Baja Gold sea salt) before sleep to increase blood volume and improve hydration, which she claims can reduce nighttime urination. Creating an optimal sleep environment is crucial, according to Gordon. She advocates for a completely dark room, free from any light sources, including illuminated clocks or device lights. She even tapes over small indicator lights on electronics. A cool room temperature, ideally between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and the use of a weighted blanket and white noise machine are also part of her strategy. Gordon stressed that waking up during the night is normal due to factors like blood sugar or temperature changes, and the key is to avoid looking at a clock to prevent stress and encourage falling back asleep.
