Behind the Scenes: Bolivia's First Presidential Debate Unveils Candidate Dynamics

La Paz, Bolivia – The first presidential debate in Bolivia, organized by Red Uno, offered an unprecedented look behind the scenes, capturing the arrival and initial reactions of the candidates. The event, hailed as a return to the era of debate in the country, saw hopefuls express both anticipation and occasional tension. Upon their early arrival, candidates were observed preparing in their dressing rooms. Manfred Reyes Villa, the first to arrive, expressed optimism, stating, "It's a good omen to be the first to arrive." He also reflected on his past experience, noting, "I was the last to debate two decades ago." Samuel Doria Medina commented on the nature of political discourse, saying, "Normally, politicians dedicate themselves to attacking, but I think it's important not to get distracted." Jorge Quiroga emphasized the importance of contrasting ideas with education. Eduardo del Castillo stated, "We came to present our proposals, we came to speak with the people." One notable moment captured off-screen involved candidate Jhonny Fernández, who reportedly lost his papers, including his government plan, which fell to the floor. Fernández later remarked on the debate's intensity, comparing it to a football match. During a break, candidates were seen discussing the initial phase, with some feeling attacked. Fernández, when asked about his aggressive approach, stated, "These debates, I love them because you have to talk about everything." Del Castillo, however, expressed disappointment, saying, "I thought they were going to come with proposals, and they came with gossip among themselves." Advisors were seen closely following the debate on large screens, providing real-time support. Notably, J.P. Velasco, the only vice-presidential candidate, accompanied his running mate throughout the event.
