Budapest, Hungary - Seven-year-old Tomika, who has been battling Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), is showing remarkable progress just one month after receiving a groundbreaking gene therapy treatment. His journey, closely followed by the entire nation, has taken a dramatic turn for the better, offering a beacon of hope to many. For two years, the country rallied to raise the 700 million Hungarian Forints needed for the "miracle drug." Tomika's mother, Anikó, shared the family's arduous early struggles. "We noticed that practically within weeks, the blender became a permanent fixture in our lives, and now I have to puree everything for him," she recounted, highlighting the severity of his condition before treatment. She also mentioned his longing for simple treats. "He really, really wanted a slice of pizza, or a Túró Rudi, or a bar of chocolate, but he doesn't ask for them anymore because he knows he can't have them."However, that is now a thing of the past. Since receiving the gene therapy, Tomika has developed significantly. He is now capable of standing on his own and has even enjoyed his first sandwich without the need for pureeing. One of his biggest wishes has also come true: he can finally eat a piece of chocolate. Furthermore, he is currently learning to drink from a cup, marking another significant milestone in his recovery. The family's perseverance and the nation's support have undoubtedly played a crucial role in Tomika's inspiring transformation.
