One experienced gardener shared a TikTok warning about overmulching, also known as "volcano mulching."
A recent video from gardening expert Ayla Bella, known as @rootingresilience_ on social media, highlights a critical error in tree care: "volcano mulching." This practice, where mulch is piled high around the base of a tree, is identified as a significant threat to tree health. According to Bella, "This mulching practice can kill your trees." She explains that mounding mulch against the trunk can lead to "a ton of problems from root girdling to trunk rot." These conditions can severely weaken or even kill trees by suffocating roots and promoting decay. Bella advises a simpler, more effective approach. "All you actually need is a couple of inches of mulch kept away from the trunk of the tree. You'll be good," she states. This method ensures trees receive the benefits of mulching, such as moisture retention and weed suppression, without succumbing to preventable damage. The expert urges viewers to "avoid wasting your money and killing your trees and stop volcano mulching."
