Dramatic Escape: Armed Drug Traffickers Evade Massive Police Operation in Rio's Rocinha
Rio de Janeiro: Dozens of Armed Drug Traffickers Escape Police Operation in Rocinha A dramatic police operation in Rio de Janeiro's Rocinha favela ended with the escape of dozens of heavily armed drug traffickers. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 31st, during a large-scale operation involving 500 officers from the Civil and Military Police, as well as the Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio de Janeiro and Ceará. The operation aimed to capture members of a criminal organization from Ceará suspected of operating in Rocinha. Drone footage released by authorities shows dozens of individuals, some wearing camouflage, fleeing into the surrounding woods. The traffickers were heavily armed. Despite the significant police presence, no arrests were made during the operation. The video also shows police officers conducting searches in the favela, highlighting the scale of the operation. "Approximately eighty traffickers, both men and women, originating from Ceará, were involved," stated Antônio José Campos Moreira, the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor General. The operation's objective was to execute 29 arrest warrants and 14 search and seizure warrants. Following the escape, police raided a luxurious building where the traffickers were believed to be staying. The building included a gym and a heated pool, providing a stark contrast to the conditions in the favela. The escape highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organized crime in Brazil. The strategic location of Rocinha, bordering other favelas and providing easy escape routes, complicates law enforcement efforts. Investigations are ongoing to locate the escaped traffickers.
