MINSK, Belarus – A local mushroom enthusiast, Alexander Gorbacevich, recently shared his experience of turning a passion for foraging into a profitable venture at the Valeryanovo market. Over two days, June 27-28, Gorbacevich meticulously collected and sorted a substantial harvest of chanterelles and orange-cap boletes from Belarusian forests. He documented his journey from dawn in the woods to setting up a stall at the bustling market. Chanterelles were sold at 40 Belarusian Rubles per kilogram, while the more prized orange-cap boletes fetched 60 Belarusian Rubles per kilogram. "The chanterelles sold out in about 30 minutes," Gorbacevich noted, highlighting the high demand for fresh wild mushrooms. Among his customers was Roman, a chef from the restaurant Odi, who stopped by to purchase some of the fresh produce. After a full day of sales, Gorbacevich calculated his net profit. "I managed to earn about $220, but after expenses, it's around $150 for two days of work," he stated, reflecting on the physical demands of the trade. His experience sheds light on the potential for local, nature-based businesses in the region.
