A recent video by mechanic Juan José from Talleres Ebenezer addresses a long-standing concern among drivers: the supposed dangers of driving a car on reserve fuel. Juan José clarifies that many common beliefs, such as fuel tanks rusting and contaminating the fuel, are outdated. Modern vehicles are equipped with plastic fuel tanks that do not rust, and their fuel filters are highly efficient at trapping any minor impurities. While it's true that fuel pumps might run at a slightly higher temperature when not fully submerged in fuel, this alone is generally not a major cause for concern. The primary risk, according to the mechanic, arises when the fuel level is extremely low and the car undergoes significant movements, causing the fuel pump to intermittently draw in air bubbles. This can potentially be damaging to the pump. Although he personally prefers to keep his tank fuller, Juan José concludes that driving on reserve is not as detrimental as widely believed, especially for cars with modern fuel systems.
