Taylor Lorenz Fires Back at Misinformation Over Journalism Fellowship Funding

Journalist Taylor Lorenz Responds to "Dark Money" Allegations. Journalist Taylor Lorenz has issued a strong rebuttal to recent accusations circulating on social media regarding her alleged receipt of "dark money" from the 1630 Fund. The controversy stems from a stitched video claiming Lorenz's journalism fellowship is funded by the 1630 Fund through the Omidyar Network. In her video response, Lorenz vehemently denied these claims, stating, "ZERO dollars in the journalism fellowship I’m in are from 1630. ZERO DOLLARS." She clarified that her current fellowship operates as an LLC, distinct from the nonprofit organization within the broader Omidyar Network, and has never received funding from the 1630 Fund. Lorenz further challenged the premise of the accusation, asserting that the Omidyar Network is "not a dark money group at all, in any capacity. It’s an open group." She criticized the original accuser for using a "weird receipt from 2020 of a $45,000 donation from the 1630 fund to some organization within the Omidyar Network that’s not the Reporters in Residence program." Expressing her frustration, Lorenz stated, "You guys are just lying... It’s shocking how stupid you guys are." She also highlighted the irony of the situation, noting, "The 1630 fund fucking hates me, okay? I don’t know why they would fund me either." Lorenz underscored the non-partisan nature of her Reporters in Residence program, emphasizing its independence from political affiliations. She concluded by criticizing the broader issue of misinformation spread by influencers, stating, "This is exactly the problem with people getting their news from influencers."
