PARIS – A recent alert from the consumer defense association UFC-Que Choisir has cast a shadow over a beloved treat: chocolate. According to a report by TF1 INFO, chocolate products, including cereals, biscuits, and cocoa powders, contain "non-negligible" quantities of cadmium, a heavy metal naturally found in the soil of cacao-producing countries. This metal, classified as carcinogenic, accumulates in the human body, posing an increased risk of cardiovascular pathologies and various cancers, including pancreatic cancer.Consumers expressed surprise and concern. One woman, examining a chocolate product, noted, "Du sucre, du cacao maigre 11%?" when asked about the ingredients, unaware of the cadmium risk. Another man interviewed outside a supermarket admitted, "Non, je ne savais pas, non," when informed about cadmium's presence.Dr. Pascal Meyvaert, a national coordinator for "Santé environnementale" (Environmental Health), highlighted the severity of the issue, stating that cadmium can lead to "l'ostéoporose, les problèmes cardiaques, les troubles du neurodéveloppement et ensuite de plus en plus de cancers, en particulier une alerte sur le cancer du pancréas." The report emphasizes that these health troubles affect even the youngest consumers. Just 20 grams of certain dark chocolates can lead a child to consume up to 87% of their tolerable daily cadmium dose. The UFC-Que Choisir urges consumers to "modérer sa consommation," especially for children. The findings underscore the need for greater awareness regarding food safety and the potential hidden dangers in our diets.
