ISTANBUL – A unique aspect of Turkish family law continues to spark debate, as women are entitled to receive lifelong alimony from their former husbands, even in cases where the marriage did not produce children. This legal provision, designed to protect women from financial hardship post-divorce, mandates that ex-husbands provide ongoing financial support, particularly if the woman was a homemaker during the marriage. The law stipulates that this alimony continues indefinitely, unless the woman remarries. Notably, even if a divorced woman enters into a new relationship, her right to receive alimony from her former spouse remains unaffected, provided she does not formally remarry. This system has drawn considerable discussion and criticism, especially from men who find themselves obligated to pay alimony for many years, often regardless of their own financial circumstances or the duration of the marriage. Critics argue that the law can lead to unfair burdens on ex-husbands, while proponents emphasize its role in safeguarding women’s economic security.
