Man Rescued After Falling Into Uncovered Manhole in Santa Cruz; Prior Complaints Ignored
SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia – A 65-year-old man was successfully rescued by volunteer firefighters on Avenida Piraí after falling into an uncovered manhole. The incident occurred when the man, walking along the sidewalk, did not notice the open manhole, which was reportedly obscured by branches. According to a volunteer firefighter, the man was able to hold onto rebar inside the manhole and call for help. A concerned citizen heard his cries and immediately alerted emergency services. Upon arrival, firefighters found the man conscious and stable, though he exhibited mild hypothermia due to exposure to the water inside the manhole. Neighbors in the area revealed that they had previously reported the hazardous open manhole to authorities, expressing concerns about public safety. However, no action had been taken to cover the manhole or place warning signs. The firefighter emphasized the importance of proper signage even if a cover cannot be immediately replaced, to prevent similar incidents.
