Vallegrande, Bolivia – The region of Vallegrande experienced its coldest temperature of the year on Friday, with mercury dropping to -1°C, resulting in the first significant frost of the season. This severe weather event has raised alarms among local farmers and authorities due to its detrimental impact on agricultural production and livestock. According to a local representative, the frost has severely affected potato and vegetable crops in the area. "This morning, we had the lowest temperature, one degree below zero, in the Cañadas area," he stated. "This is the first frost we are experiencing. Normally, there are three days, with the second day being the most intense, and we expect another frost tonight." The representative explained that while cloudy conditions had previously offered some protection, the sky cleared overnight, leading to the intense cold. He noted that farmers typically avoid planting certain vegetable crops during this period due to the known risk of frost. Beyond crops, the frost also presents a significant challenge for the livestock sector. The representative highlighted two main risks: the loss of natural and cultivated pastures, which serve as feed for animals, and the potential for mortality among vulnerable livestock, particularly young calves, due to the extreme cold.
