Memphis, TN - An 83-year-old woman, Marva Williams, was reportedly illegally evicted from her home in Memphis, Tennessee, by a private processing company, despite a court order halting the action. The incident, which occurred on a Friday, saw Ms. Williams' belongings removed and placed outside her residence. According to a representative from Williams Family Advocacy, who spoke in a video addressing the situation, Ms. Williams meets the minimum requirements under Tennessee Code 67-5-702, which exempts certain individuals, including those 65 and older who meet income requirements, and spouses of veterans, from paying property taxes. The advocate stated that county records indicate Ms. Williams has been paying her property taxes and may have even overpaid, suggesting the county owes her money. The advocacy group successfully obtained a court order to stop the eviction, but the processing service allegedly continued to remove her belongings even after being informed of the order. The speaker emphasized that such illegal evictions disproportionately affect Black and brown communities in Memphis, contributing to gentrification. The group urged the public to share the information to raise awareness and stop these practices.
